Tulla Utd (2) vs (4) Salthill Devon
Our 2013 Boys Galway Cup Team started the week with a game against a strong Salthill Devon U13 Team. With a 9.30am kick off these boys had to get up very early to make the trip to Drom Soccer Park in Rahoon, Co. Galway. The game started evenly with both teams sharing possession.
It was the home team that took the lead with 15mins to go in the 1st half which the travelling supporters and some neutrals called for an offside. Unfortunately, the match officials didn’t agree, and the goal stood.
The Tulla players responded with 7mins to go when a CJ O’Doherty shot was saved by the keeper and Oritseweyinmi Emiko pounced on the deflected save to put the ball in the back of the net. The joy of the comeback was short lived as Salthill Devon took the lead again 2minutes later to finish the 1st half 1 – 2.
The 2nd half started with Tulla pressing forward in search of an equalizer. We thought that opportunity had come when Ryan Vaughan appeared to be pushed in the penalty area from behind only for the officials to see it differently from the angles they viewed. While the players were trying to come to terms with the disappointment of not being awarded the penalty, the play continued, and Salthill Devon extended their lead to 1 – 3.
Leo Walshe stepped up with 14mins to go with a beautiful left footer into the corner. 2 – 3. This goal spurred the boys on and nearly had us level again when Oran Rodgers hit another left footer sweetly passed the keeper only for it to come off the upright and cleared by the Salthill Devon defence. Tulla kept the pressure on and with 8 minutes to go Oritseweyinmi Emiko had a shot saved by the keeper.
Stand in keeper Seánie Hayes pulled off two point blank saves in the dying moments of the game. Very impressive performance from a player who never played in goal for us before.
The killer blow game in the last minute of the game when Tulla conceded the 4th goal. Game ended Tulla Utd 2 – 4 Salthill Devon.
The players should be proud of the way they performed in their 1st game of this competitive tournament.
Best of luck to Salthill Devon for the rest of the tournament. Next up Temple Villa AFC tomorrow at 4.45pm
