CSSL Under 14 League Division 1

Shannon Town Utd 0 Tulla United 3

Tulla United captured the Clare Schoolboy Soccer League Under 14 Division 1 title for the first time since 2005 when overcoming Shannon Town Utd in windy and wet conditions in Shannon on Thursday last. Both sides were in contention for league honours and this added some spice to what was the last game of the season for both sides.

The home side won the toss and took advantage of the strong wind in the first half to dominate the opening quarter. After forcing a succession of early corners, that were whipped in expertly by Scott Kirkland, they created the first clear cut chance of the game when Fionn McInerney headed against the crossbar after 12 minutes. Another corner 5 minutes later led to a scramble in the six yard box that eventually saw a close range shot bravely blocked on the line by Tulla defender T.J. Dillon at the expense of another corner. Tulla keeper Arron Curtis grabbed the next delivery from under his cross bar and quickly released the ball to Fiachra Hale who linked up with Diarmuid Molloy and he shaved the far post from a narrow angle with the Shannon keeper beaten.

Tulla's best chances were coming on the break and after soaking up some more pressure Jack McSweeney took a pass from Dara Ryan before releasing Fiachra Hale from the halfway line and he dribbled past two Shannon Town defenders before beating the advancing keeper from 15 yards in the 25th minute. Tulla enjoyed a period of dominance from here until half-time and in the 30th minute a Diarmuid Molloy corner wasn't properly cleared and after Ronan Dooley and Daragh Keogh had their efforts blocked, centre-forward Adam O'Neill forced the ball home in the six yard box. Two minutes later Tulla added a third when Ian MacNamara whipped in a cross from the right and the Shannon Town defence only managed to clear the ball as far as Diarmuid Molloy and tucked a right footed shot in the bottom corner from the edge of the box to the away side a 3-0 lead at the break.

Despite making a number of positional changes for the second-half and putting centre-back Fionn McInerney into a more advanced role, the home side struggled to create clear cut chances. The Tulla Utd back four of Eoin McCarthy, Darragh Keogh, T.J. Dillon and Dara Ryan were rock solid in front of keeper Arron Curtis. Tulla had the better of the second-half chances with Adam O'Neill finding space in the box but not getting enough power on his shot to trouble the keeper, Donal Sheedy having his goalbound effort blocked after intercepting a clearance and Sean Withycombe getting on the end of a Ruairi O'Sullivan pass to force a fine save from the Shannon Town keeper. Shannon Town's Fionn McInerney has a long range effort saved by Arron Curtis and Tulla had the final say when Dara Ryan's free kick clipped the crossbar with time almost up, to leave the final score at 0-3 to the away side.

Outstanding on the day, for a Tulla United squad that went unbeaten over the course of the league season, were Fiachra Hale, Darragh Keogh, Eoin McCarthy, Diarmuid Molloy and substitutes Donal Sheedy and Sean Withycombe. Shannon Town had strong performances from Scott Kirkland and Daithi Lohan. After the game, CSSL Registrar Conor Twomey presented the Pa O'Brien Memorial Cup to Tulla Captain, Jack McSweeney.

The Tulla United squad were: Aaron Curtis, T.J. Dillon, Donal Sheedy, Darragh Keogh, Dara Ryan, Diarmuid Molloy, Jack McSweeney, Adam O'Neill, Ian McNamara, Sean Withycombe, Fiachra Hale, Ruairi O'Sullivan, Eoin McCarthy, Neil Callaghan, Ronan Dooley, Liam O'Mahony, Eric Berqvist, Niall Boormann, John Moloney, Luke Woodrow, Fionn Hickey, Emmet Lynch.
